~Settle and Victoria Cave~
21st March 2010
A rather overcast day and a short journey to Settle to check the local weather and then see if we could find a local walk. It's many years since I'd been to Victoria Cave and it was time to take another look....
Settle Market Place
Scroll down for photos and a description of the walk
Cake Cafe
We parked out of the centre for no charge and tried out this upstairs cafe at Car & Kitchen. See RRR later.
The Folly, Settle
Behind the scenes in Settle there are a number interesting and unusual buildings, most striking of which is "The Folly" see link.
Primitive Methodist Chapel, Settle
Very probably not now a chapel, but I can't be sure. The date above the door is 184?, not entirely clear. Primitive refers to a branch of Methodism. As the grandson of a Methodist Minister, I have just a little interest in these buildings and their histories.
Settle Street
Look carefully and you will see plenty going on. The property on the left has a hoist to lift heavy items up to the first floor. Cold callers are knocking on doors and I think they are of a religious persuasion.
Pendle Hill
We left Settle and climbed about 350ft up the back road before leaving the road and heading for Attermire Scar. Looking back, a familiar landmark comes into view.
Attermire Scar
I have been in Attermire Cave before today, but not this time. The route to Victoria Cave is taken from behind the rocky outcrop left of centre.
Victoria Cave
The cave is up there to the right, a sign warning walkers to keep out is in place:
Danger!
OK, hands up, who is dissuaded from going up for a look after reading this sign? And who cannot wait to check out this dangerous place?
Victoria Cave entrance
Inside Victoria Cave
This place has an interesting history and you can find out more right here. Nothing fell on our heads whilst we were there.
Stainforth
Stainforth Scar is on the right and the caravan site just above the Foss is in view. Moughton is in cloud further away.
Settle
Old Settle
Another view of old Settle and another hoist, the cobbled street leads down to Settle centre.
Castleberg Sports
A well equipped outdoor clothing shop, I've bought stuff from here before today. Oh and another hoist, very popular in this market town.
Taking The "P" ?
Walkers: Karen and Me
Time taken: 2hrs 15mins over a distance of approx. 5 miles.
Route: Settle, back road to Attermire Scar, Attermire Scar, Victoria Cave, track towards Langcliffe, then fields back to Settle.
Weather and conditions: Dull and overcast, cool. Rain nearby, but not on us.
Greetings Count: Medium with quite a few walkers around the cave areas.
Richard's Refreshment Review: Cake Cafe, above Car & Kitchen in Settle. This little cafe is OK, quite small, but very clean and a good menu for snacks and drinks. Tea and crumpets went down very well.
